Ok, if you're not up to reading a rant, then just ignore this journal.
I love how those with money and got C's in school are in charge of everything. These people in charge have a hard time running things and for whatever reason, like to make it even harder for those around them. Passing laws on state issued scholarships stating that you have to repay the money if you withdraw from the class, even if by not withdrawing you are lowering the amount of money you receive next year just because you don't have the funds to repay them in the first place. In that case, what's the point of even needing a scholarship?
Or what about those people who earned a degree and get paid to advise people, or in this case students, on how to go about getting their own degree. My experience is: These people can't lead others out of a wet paper bag! Honestly! From high school to community college to the university, these people are useless. Pure and Simple. High school all they were good for was fixing schedules that got screwed up when THEY put them in. Community college was all about finding what career path you might want. Rather than suggesting you take a course here and there to sample the coursework required, the sage advice was purely: go to the career testing center and take these useless placement tests that do nothing for you. University? I thought I knew where I wanted to be. I still think getting to that end result is a good idea for me. I still think I'd be a great teacher. The problem? The program to become one is driving me insane. I go to the adviser to get out of the program and go into a different one. From the college of education to the College of Arts and Sciences isn't that hard, is it? Before I leave my meeting with her, I ask her about this digital teacher portfolio program that I had yet to buy. I asked if I still needed to get it since apparently I can't pass certain classes without it. She said not to worry about it.
Sounds simple and relatively screw-up-free, right? WRONG!
So what's the problem now, you may ask... well, I was reminded of the not being allowed to pass some of my classes without it. I asked the adviser again and got told that she's not in charge of that portfolio program thingie and that she apparently misinformed me. Then I was told to direct any questions about it to the office in charge of it... my question was just how do I make an appeal about needing the program or how to circumvent needing it. That's something the adviser should know, right? Apparently, wrong again. I seriously doubt that she looked at my message or even heard what I was asking before responding with "That's not my area".
How is it that these people get into these positions where they shouldn't be? "They just want to help people" won't work this time. If they wanted to help people, they'd make sure they knew how to do their job and if they don't know, at least find some reference to get the answer from or point the person they're helping to where real help is... and include how to contact said helpful person. That would really help, wouldn't it?
School with a "Full" scholarship that's supposed to cover tuition for any state university but doesn't, book expenses and extra expenses for each class's requirements is bad enough. The frustration one gets from pointless classes where there is no real learning or anything is considered normal. This hell that the advisers and "portfolio program" and not allowing students to pass without it despite other campuses of the same university surviving without it (oh yes, it's true), shouldn't be normal.Preventing a student from completing a course despite getting the highest possible grades on all of their assignments just because they don't have the money to buy this program or because it would literally be a waste of money that could better be spent on the next semesters books, should not be normal.
Or am I not normal for thinking this way? I'm ticked off with this situation as a whole anyway. I don't have all the money in the world to pay for all of this crap. I haven't won the lottery. I don't have the uber-rich family like the Vanderbilts or the Rothschilds. I'm not in that lowest tax bracket that gets the Pell grant. I'm in that grey bracket that's left to fend for ourselves. We are the mass of forgotten.
