The Witch's Brew

With the end of summer comes Halloween, a time for the bat
to rule the night. Then the cat
will come to play,
if only for the sake of the witch
who stirs her bubbly brew, watching as the spider
weaves on her loom. Nothing's quite as much a treat.

"Of course the real treat
of the night is the scare," says the bat.
"Nothing's quite like that," agrees the spider.
"Oh, I wish you'd give it a rest," sighed the cat
who watched the witch
go on with her spell-play.

Of course magic isn't something with which you play
or else you're in for a trick, not a treat,
soon relearned the witch.
The smoke inhaled by the bat
made him fly into the cat.
This much amused the spider.

"Oh, what a great time," said the spider
"Oh, I'm so glad our pain is naught but a play
for you," grumbled the cat.
"Yeah, this is such a treat,
this awful smoke," said the bat.
All you could hear was coughing from the witch.

"Finally I got it!" exclaimed the witch.
Away into his hidey hole did the spider
go. Fly away onto the roof went the bat.
Nobody wanted to play
with this special treat...
except for the cat.

So alone near the cauldron sat the cat,
save for the witch
who had made the treat.
Out peeked the spider
from his little hidey hole, unwilling to play.
"Why, it's a jack-o-lantern, shaped like a mouse," yelled the bat.

Down to the cat flew the bat
who was adoringly watched by the witch as it started to play.
"That certainly is no treat for me," was heard from the niche of the spider.
